Text 27 Aug Prize winning awkward moment of the week

So, there’s a university listserv for selling things and sending out ads, and I got lucky and someone was selling a set of three Le Creuset saucepans with lids and a frying pan for the equivalent of less than the cost of any one of those pans new.  They were a bit older, with wooden handles, but they were in good shape and everyone knows that cast iron holds up exactly forever.  To top it all off, they were red.

I emailed the very nice lady who was selling them, and arranged to go to pick them up during my lunch break.  The building I’m in is actually rather far from the University itself, so I took the bus over and found the building.  The pots and pans looked great in person as well, and I proceeded to fill my backpack with cast iron (note: so heavy, and god, hills).  The very nice lady then started this conversation.

Very Nice Lady:  So, what kind of work do you do?
me:  Oh, I’m a postdoc over there, and my research focuses on Candida albicans
Very Nice Lady:  Do you work for <name of my boss>?
me:  Yes, actually!
Very Nice Lady:  I’m his ex wife.
me: …..(look of horror)
Very Nice Lady:  Oh!  No!  Oh, he’s a very nice man, except for the … yeah, well, very nice!
me: ….Thanksforthepotswillenjoythemverymuchmustcatchbusbyyyyyyeee
